my i space: Petaluma House
Home renovation of Adam & Nikki Yazxhi
About the renovation: Nikki and Adam Yazxhi know good things take time. The couple purchased their four-bedroom Avalon home in 2002 and restored it over three separate renovations across 14 years.
“Every room was painted a different bright and loud colour, remnants of the original carpet remained, storage was a scarce commodity and the kitchen and bathroom were in dire need of major work,” says Nikki, who works alongside Adam at design agency Maxco, while also running her lifestyle publication bellamumma.
The third renovation was when they met Javier and commissioned him to create the joinery for their new home.
Here’s what Nikki and Adam have to say about the renovation:
What was the aim of the renovation? “We wanted to create a low-maintenance contemporary home which emphasised elegance, comfort and simplicity. We also wanted to create for space and storage in the overall design.”
How did you meet Javier? “We engaged our friend Nina Maya of Nina Maya Interiors to help get the job done and create a space that would accommodate our family with longevity in mind. Nina knew us really well and together we worked on how to streamline, simplify and create more space using luxury finishes and functional pieces,” Nikki says. “She introduced us to Javier and we couldn’t be happier that she did.”
What rooms were renovated? “We completely gutted the house and started from scratch. Every room in the house was renovated, and every room in the house has i space joinery. That includes the kitchen, three bedrooms, home office, dining room, laundry, bathroom and ensuite.”
How long did the renovation take? “We were really organised so the whole renovation took three months and one week.” All our trades were amazing with the deadlines and all worked together perfectly. It was a dream team.”
Favourite joinery in the house? “I don’t think we could choose a favourite. We love how every piece of joinery not only how it looks, but how it works. It’s completely streamlined our home and created more space and most importantly more storage. If you were to insist on a favourite it would probably be the butler’s pantry. It really is the hub of the home.”
Unexpected advantages of the new joinery? “How easy the house is to keep clean! Every piece is so streamlined and stylish, cleaning is so easy.”
“With everything designed and purpose-built we have so much more space and so much more storage, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve with the renovation.”
Would you recommend Javier and i space? “Absolutely, without a doubt. Javier is so easy to work with, has amazing style, great insights, and is an absolute perfectionist. He takes great care and pride in his work. His workmanship is faultless. We can’t recommend him highly enough. We’ve recommended Javier to friends and they feel the same.”
