The Custom-Built Wardrobe: The New Must-Have in Luxury Living

Wardrobes have become more than just a place to hang your clothes—they’re now a genuine statement piece in luxury homes. As featured in the Australian Financial Review, the trend of custom-built wardrobes is changing the way people think about their bedroom design…

At iSpace Solutions, we’ve had the pleasure working with interior designer Nina Maya on several stunning wardrobe projects that have redefined how our clients live. Maya, who is based in Paddington, Sydney, has been at the forefront of this shift. “We had a client spend an extraordinary amount on his wardrobe,” she says. “To give you an idea, it was the kind of money most people would spend on joinery for an entire house. But for him, it all went into his walk-in robe.”

What makes this particular project so unique is that the client wasn’t even a fashion lover—it was simply about creating something special for himself. “He wanted everything: glass doors, custom brass framing. The wardrobe ended up looking like something you’d expect to see in a Louis Vuitton boutique,” Maya explains.

The idea of the walk-in robe as a luxury retreat is definitely gaining traction. Clients are asking for everything from bespoke cabinetry to high-end lighting that shows off their clothing, shoes, and accessories. “It’s less about the master suite now and more about making the wardrobe a feature,” says Maya. “It’s no longer just a place to shove your clothes—it’s about displaying them, making the space feel curated.”

At iSpace Solutions, we know how to balance form and function. The layout is key—everything needs to be perfectly placed for ease and flow. “When you’re getting ready, everything should be within reach,” Maya says. Coat racks are often placed near the entrance, and shoe storage is carefully positioned next to mirrors so you can check your outfit before you walk out the door.

In a recent Bellevue Hill project, we worked closely with Maya to treat the wardrobe as more than just storage. “We made everything custom—from the wallpaper to the hand-formed brass handles,” Maya explains. It was a true collaboration, with iSpace Solutions ensuring every detail was crafted to perfection.

Security also plays a part in these luxurious wardrobes. Hidden safes are cleverly integrated, with decoy safes included to deter would-be thieves. “The real valuables are kept somewhere else,” Maya adds with a smile.

While some clients are eager to show off their collections, practicality remains a priority. One client, for example, requested a special drawer for his watches, but his insurer recommended against it. “We still built the drawer,” Maya recalls, “but it’s filled with replica watches.”

At iSpace Solutions, we believe that with the right vision, there’s no limit to what can be achieved. Though some might see a wardrobe like this as extravagant, it’s an opportunity to elevate daily life. Think about how often you’ve stood there saying, “I have nothing to wear.” A custom wardrobe transforms that daily routine into something to look forward to.

The million-dollar wardrobe isn’t just a place to store clothes—it’s a statement about living a luxurious, considered life. With iSpace Solutions working alongside Nina Maya, these wardrobes are more than functional—they’re works of art.
