constructive chat: One Up Building

Builder Rick Simmons, from One Up Building chats about working with Javier and the
i space team on the Lurline Bay project…

How Javier from i space became involved in your project? Javier's involvement in our project began when he was introduced to us by interior designer Andrea de Cruz. Andrea had a well-established and positive working relationship with Javier from previous collaborations, which made him a natural choice for this project.

Did Andrea have prior experience working with Javier? Yes. Andrea's familiarity with Javier's work and his reliability on previous projects played a significant role in his selection for our project. Her endorsement of his skills and professionalism was reassuring.

Had you personally seen any of i space’s work before this project? In all honesty, I hadn't had the opportunity to see Javier's work before this project. However, based on Andrea's recommendations and the initial meetings we had with him, we felt confident in his abilities.

So this project involved a renovation, but it sounds like it was quite extensive. Can you clarify whether it was a renovation or a new build? Although we officially categorised it as a major renovation, the scope of the work was so comprehensive that it almost felt like a new build. The transformation was truly extensive, encompassing virtually every aspect of the house.

The entire house underwent significant changes, correct? Absolutely, the entire house was subject to substantial changes and improvements. The level of detail and precision required for this project was quite demanding.

When it comes to your interactions with Javier during the project, could you share your experience working with him? Of course. While I didn't have as many direct interactions with Javier as my colleague Scott did, I can attest that Javier's approach was highly accommodating. Our project faced tight schedules and challenging access issues. However, Javier approached these challenges with a positive attitude and a willingness to collaborate. He didn't complain and instead proactively worked with our team, which significantly contributed to the project's success.

It sounds like he was quite flexible in his approach? Yes, Javier's flexibility was certainly one of the standout qualities that made our collaboration smoother. It's essential on a project like this, where additions can occur, to have tradespeople who can adapt seamlessly to the evolving needs of the job.

How long did the renovation take to complete, and did everything go according to plan? The renovation took approximately 16 months to complete, which was in line with our initial estimates. Any minor adjustments or additions were addressed promptly, thanks to the collaborative spirit of our team.

As you progressed through the renovation and the build, what were your thoughts about Javier's joinery work? Javier's joinery work was impressive. He demonstrated the ability to handle a substantial volume of work within tight timeframes, which was crucial for keeping the project on track. Furthermore, his receptiveness to feedback and his willingness to make any necessary adjustments or touch-ups ensured that the final result met our expectations. It's always reassuring to work with a professional who values open communication and strives for perfection.

It sounds like flexibility is key on a project like this? Absolutely. Flexibility and adaptability are invaluable traits in the construction industry, and Javier exemplified these qualities.

Finally, regarding the joinery in the home, is there a particular piece or room where you were particularly impressed with Javier's work? Certainly, one of the standout areas where Javier's work truly shone was the kitchen. The level of detail and craftsmanship in the kitchen joinery was exceptional. What really impressed us was the seamless integration of the joinery with the stone elements. The hidden stone supports added a touch of elegance and sophistication, making the kitchen a showpiece within the home. It was a testament to Javier's skill and attention to detail.
