team talk: CHAD TERENCE CASWELL

FACTORY & PRODUCTION MANAGER

We had the privilege of interviewing Chad, who plays a pivotal role at iSpace Solutions, where he is the Factory and Production Manager. We chatted with him about his daily responsibilities, his career objectives, and the remarkable accomplishments he has achieved thus far...

How has your role title changed since the last time we discussed it?
Chad: Yes, when we previously discussed it, I was solely the Factory Manager.

So now you've taken on the responsibility of production as well?
Chad: Yes, that's correct. Now I handle both factory management and production management.

It seems like these roles go hand in hand. Could you elaborate on the changes you've experienced in terms of planning and timeframe?
Chad: Previously, my planning focused on a two-week timeframe. However, with the recent changes, I now plan for months in advance. I also need to make adjustments as we progress.

So your day-to-day tasks involve overseeing new projects and other responsibilities. Could you provide more details about your role?
Chad: Certainly. My tasks include managing the factory floor workers, conducting toolbox talks and health and safety discussions, as well as addressing any issues they may encounter. I'm also involved in problem-solving and resolving drafting issues that arise during the manufacturing process. Additionally, I handle machine maintenance and ensure our inventory is well-stocked with the necessary hardware and supplies.

It sounds like a busy role that requires a broad range of skills. Many people may not realise the intricacies involved.
Chad: Absolutely. It's a comprehensive list of tasks, and there are daily changes. Although I have a set routine, unexpected events such as deliveries and new jobs require flexibility and adaptability. By the end of the day, certain tasks must be completed.

Communication and collaboration must be crucial in your position, given the nature of your work. How frequently do you interact with your team?
Chad: Interacting with the team constitutes a major part of my day. The factory workers are my first priority, and I spend a significant amount of time with each of them, ensuring they understand their daily tasks and the processes involved. In addition, I liaise with drafters in the office to troubleshoot issues, find solutions, and coordinate any specific machining requirements.

So, you serve as the intermediary between the office and the factory, facilitating job handovers and ensuring smooth operations?
Chad: Exactly. I collaborate closely with the drafters during job handovers, where we discuss the drawings, assembly methods, and potential issues. Then, when I meet with the factory workers, I walk them through the job, ensuring they understand the assembly process and any instructions from the drafters. It's an essential part of my role.

It's evident that teamwork plays a significant role in your work. What would you say is your favourite aspect of your job?
Chad: I would typically say I enjoy the challenges that arise in my role. However, considering the past few weeks, I may need to rethink that response (laughs).

Working for a company like iSpace, do you feel it has provided you with more opportunities for professional growth?
Chad: Definitely. Prior to joining iSpace, I had almost 10 years of experience and even ran my own business. However, working here has offered me numerous growth opportunities. We have weekly meetings, and every two weeks, I receive coaching sessions. Through this coaching, I've gained invaluable knowledge that I don't think I could have acquired elsewhere. iSpace has undoubtedly provided me with unique opportunities for growth.

Having experienced various projects, do you have a favourite one that stands out?
Chad: Yes, there was a project I worked on that involved intricate aluminium and glasswork. I personally built the middle piece, which served as a watch display. That project stands out as my favourite so far due to the immense effort and attention to detail involved

It sounds like a challenging and rewarding project. Were there any particular techniques or skills that you had to utilize for its successful completion?
Chad: Absolutely. The project pushed the boundaries of my trade knowledge. It required precise craftsmanship, attention to detail, and integration of curved glass pieces with timber elements. I had to heat the edges to bend them to the required radius. It was a highly intricate and enjoyable endeavour.

Your work on that project seems to have demanded a high level of skill and expertise. Do you have any other projects that stand out as favourites?
Chad: (Laughs) It's a tough question. I'll have to leave that one unanswered for now. Perhaps the next project will become another favourite!

It sounds like a fantastic work environment with a supportive team. Maintaining humility and acknowledging that there is always more to learn seems to be key aspects of your work. The industry evolves rapidly, and there's constant room for growth.
Chad: Absolutely. In this trade, technology advances quickly, and one must always be open to learning. Even when you think you know enough, new discoveries and advancements emerge. It's an ever-evolving field, and there's always more to explore.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals within the company? Do you envision yourself in a different role or are you content with your current position?
Chad: I genuinely love my current position as it provides daily challenges that foster personal growth. The team here has been together for quite some time, and we have a great rapport, both professionally and personally. In the next five years, I might further delve into production management and scheduling. As for the rest, who knows? (Laughs) I might become a partner if the opportunity arises.
