interior insight: Sarah-Jane Pyke

Arent&Pyke Principal, Sarah-Jane Pyke discusses working with Javier and the iSpace team on the Bay House project…

When did you work on the project together? We commenced the project late 2022 and completed it in late 2023.

What was the aim of the project? Excited by the notion of a ‘lock and leave’ home for the new chapter in their lives, our clients requested introspective spaces to indulge in their extra free time, resulting in two of the four bedrooms flanking the entrance transforming into ‘his’ and ‘her’ studies in addition to the creation of the cosy breakfast nook in the kitchen. Equally, they desired settings to entertain parties of friends and family that could also handle active young grandchildren.

How did you meet Javier? We had been following Javier’s work for some time via other designers, so BAY HOUSE was our first project together forging a new relationship for our practice.

What rooms were renovated? We renovated the whole floor apartment including 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, with an extensive renovation to the kitchen, living room with fireplace, dining room and the addition of a new wine cellar.

How long did the renovation take? Occupying a rectangular floorplate across an entire level of a boutique luxury apartment block overlooking Mosman Bay, we avoided unnecessary structural interventions given the generous proportions and fluid integration of the rooms, enabling the project to be completed within an efficient 12-month turn-around period (including the 5-month build).

What were your expectations re: the joinery? We design and detail joinery to the highest standard so it’s important that we work with joiners who can produce our exacting details and execute the finish to that same standard.

Favourite joinery - and why? The sliding panel in the living room that conceals the tv and display shelving {above} feels seamlessly integrated in the space, but the beautiful panelling makes it an elegant decorative piece that also stand alone.

Unexpected advantages of the new joinery? All aspects of our joinery designs are very considered; however, it was magical seeing the combination of materials come together and integrate so seamlessly into the space was a beautiful outcome.

Would you recommend Javier and iSpace Solutions? We had a fabulous experience working with Javier and the iSpace Solutions team. Javier has great problem-solving abilities and worked with us to ensure our vision was realised.
